Carpet cleaning in Bexley

Many Bexley permit zones are controlled for only two hours a day, often 10am to 12pm, and outside those hours anyone can park free off the double yellows. On our list, a three-seat sofa and two armchairs is £149.

Interwar semis: two floors and a staircase

Bexley's own Local Character Study says the population doubled in ten years, from 100,000 in 1931 to 200,000 in 1941, as the interwar estates went up, and that most of the borough is still two storeys high. The 2021 Census put 44.2% of households in a semi-detached house.

In a two-storey house the stairs come with the job: a three-bed house with the living room, hall, stairs and landing is £223. If the front and back rooms were knocked into one years ago, that's a through lounge at £61, and a small third bedroom is a box room at £29. Start in the morning and the downstairs is usually fit to walk on by the evening, since carpets take 5 to 7 hours to dry. Every room has its own line on the price list, and no booking comes to less than £67.

Carpet and sofa cleaning across Bexley, from Sidcup to Erith

The zone hours below are from the council's business-permit list, which says local arrangements may vary by road. Thamesmead is shared with Greenwich, and this page covers Thamesmead East.

Sidcup DA14 · DA15

Sidcup has large Victorian and Edwardian houses alongside its 1930s suburbs, and more flats than the borough as a whole: 42.7% of households, against 24.7% across Bexley. Zone S in the town centre is controlled 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and it's one of the three town-centre zones where scratch cards cost more. In one of the big older houses, put the stairs, the landing and any wool carpet on the booking so the office can plan the day.

Bexleyheath DA7 · DA6

Bexleyheath's clock tower went up in 1912 to mark George V's coronation, and most homes here are younger than it; the biggest group, 42.0%, went up between the wars. Four in five households (79.6%) own their home, against 68.6% across Bexley, and 52.5% live in a semi. If you have a drive, offer it to the cleaner. It saves you a scratch card in zone A, which covers 8.30am to 5.30pm from Monday to Saturday.

Erith DA8

Erith's old town was demolished in phases from 1966 to 1980 as the centre was rebuilt. The figures show more recent building than elsewhere in Bexley: 18.5% of homes date from 2000 or later, the most of the eight areas here, and social tenants make up 23.3% of households, against 14.7% borough-wide. Zone ER is controlled for two hours on weekday mornings, 10am to noon, so an afternoon start keeps the cleaner's car clear of it.

Crayford DA1

Crayford Manor House was remodelled in 1816 for the Rev. Thomas Barne. Seven in ten Crayford households live in a house, 45.8% have three bedrooms, and semis (41.8%) outnumber terraces. Zone E applies from 9am to 11am on weekdays, right where a morning start falls, so for a Monday-to-Friday clean either keep a scratch card ready or ask the office about starting at eleven. The Thames Road recycling centre is in Crayford, if the old underlay is going too.

Welling DA16

After the First World War, Bexley Urban District Council built more than 400 houses north of the railway in Welling, and building carried on from there: 75.6% of homes date from 1919 to 1939. More than half of households (55.7%) live in a semi, a bigger share than anywhere else on this page, and only 14.1% in a flat. With a semi the stairs come as standard: the hall is £22, the flight £41 and the landing £9. Zone W in the town centre runs 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

Belvedere DA17

Belvedere has more private renters than any other Bexley area here, 26.5% of households against 15.3% borough-wide, and it's the one ward where landlords need a selective licence. Its homes are older too: 28.1% predate 1919, and the council designated the Woolwich Road Conservation Area in February 1992 for its Victorian character. When a tenancy ends, the tenant and the landlord can share one invoice, split room by room, so each pays for their own part.

Bexley Village DA5 · DA14

Bexley Village's zone H is controlled for just one hour, 10am to 11am on weekdays. Detached houses are far more common here: 25.8% of households live in one, more than three times Bexley's 7.4%, and 30.5% have four or more bedrooms. A big house can keep the cleaner working through that hour, so have a scratch card ready for a weekday morning. The ward also takes in all of Foots Cray Meadows, with the River Cray running through.

Thamesmead SE28 · SE2 · DA18

Much of Thamesmead was built by the Greater London Council, and the first home was occupied in 1968; Bexley's part is the Thamesmead East ward. Social housing is home to 43.4% of households here, nearly three times Bexley's 14.7%. 39.0% of households live in a terraced house, and nearly every flat is in a purpose-built block. Above the first floor, if the lift is out or there isn't one, carrying the machine up costs £10 a floor.

Book round the two-hour window

Plenty of Bexley's permit zones are controlled for two hours only, for example 10am to 12pm, to keep commuters from parking all day. The town centres are controlled all day. Outside a zone's controlled hours, anyone may park free except on double yellow lines.

That gives you a choice. A start after the window closes needs nothing from you. A morning start dries sooner but needs a visitor scratch card: £22 for a book of ten, or £27 in the Bexleyheath, Sidcup and Welling town centre zones, which are controlled all day Monday to Saturday. Businesses can't buy them, so the office will ask whether you have one. A one- or two-room job is usually over in 90 minutes or less, so it can often fit in the uncontrolled hours anyway. If the only parking left is a paid bay, we add what it costs and nothing on top.

Sofas need their fire labels to go to charity

A light oatmeal linen three-seat sofa in a calm London flat

Bexley's recycling A to Z is blunt about upholstery. Charities only take sofas and armchairs that still carry their fire labels, and at the recycling centres sofas go in the non-recyclable section. A council bulky collection starts at £50.

If the frame is sound and the fabric is just grubby, a wash may be all it needs. On our list a three-seat sofa is £83. The care label gets read before anything else: a 'do not wash' or X label stops the job, and leather and velvet aren't cleaned. Removable covers stay on the sofa and get cleaned there. Expect the cleaner for one to three hours with a sofa and chairs, and the drying to run 12 to 15 hours, so book a morning. More on sofas and armchairs.

Belvedere landlords

Belvedere is the only ward in Bexley with selective licensing, which runs from 13 January 2025 to 12 January 2030; a licence there costs £350 plus £480. Elsewhere in the borough the council lists only mandatory licensing for larger houses in multiple occupation. 15.3% of Bexley households rent privately. When a let changes hands, we can divide the invoice by room between landlord and outgoing tenant, so tell the office who pays for what when it calls.

Asked in Bexley

Where does the old carpet go?

To the carpet recycling area at either recycling centre: Foots Cray on Maidstone Road (DA14 5HS, shut on Wednesdays) or Thames Road in Crayford (DA1 5QJ). Take a driving licence or council tax bill. Mattresses have an area of their own. Vans are turned away and have to use the Thames Road transfer station instead.

Will the council's crew come in and fetch the sofa?

No. Bexley's bulky crews won't go inside the home, or into a back garden without side access, and items mustn't be left on the public highway. Our cleaner does come in, mind; that's rather the point.

Do you cover Thamesmead and Erith?

Yes, the whole borough, and over the borders into Greenwich and Bromley. The card prices the job for your postcode, and the office checks parking with you when it calls.

How much notice do you need?

A week usually does it, sometimes less. Weekends book up first, so for a Saturday in Bexleyheath or Sidcup, ask earlier. The day is held with a 50% deposit, paid by card or bank transfer.
