Parking in the Square Mile

A City pay bay costs £5 to £10 an hour on weekdays between 8am and 7pm, depending on the vehicle, and nobody can stay longer than four hours. On a City job the parking takes more planning than the carpet does.

When the office rings to check the details, they'll ask whether your building has a car park, a loading bay or a space the concierge can hold for a few hours. If none of that exists, the cleaner pays for a bay and the parking goes on your bill at what it cost. Nothing is added on top.

Some days are kinder than others:

  • Sundays and bank holidays: street parking is free.
  • Saturdays: £2 for any stay between 8am and 11am.
  • From May 2027, maybe longer hours. The council is consulting until 2 December 2026 on charging from 7am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday.

Weekends book up first. If you want a Sunday, ask a week or two ahead.

Barbican, Golden Lane and the lift question

A sunny living room in a London Victorian terrace with a freshly cleaned pale grey carpet

The Barbican Estate was built between the 1960s and 1982 on a raised podium above car parks. It holds over 2,000 flats, maisonettes and terraced houses, and it was listed at grade II, as one building, in 2001. Golden Lane next door was finished in 1962 with 559 flats and maisonettes. Together they make up one of the City's 28 conservation areas.

For a clean, the layout matters more than the listing. A maisonette has its own flight inside, priced at £41 for the stairs and £9 for the landing. If you live above the first floor and there's no lift, or the lift is out that week, the cleaner carries the machine up by hand, and that's £10 a floor.

So tell the office the block, the floor and whether the lift is working. It saves a phone call from the podium on the day.

Nearly half the City rents privately

48.3% of City households rent from a private landlord, out of 4,914 households in the 2021 Census. That means a steady run of move-outs. If you're the one leaving, book the clean for a morning a day or two before the check-out. Carpets usually dry in 5 to 7 hours and a sofa in 12 to 15, so a morning start gives the carpets the afternoon and the sofa the night.

Landlords and letting agents can have the invoice split room by room. Handy when the inventory clerk only flagged the bedroom.

On licensing, the City keeps it simple: it licenses houses in multiple occupation under the national mandatory scheme (five or more people from two or more households), and that's the only scheme it runs.

When a carpet is past saving

Some carpets are finished. Bleach marks, burns and old set-in stains may not shift, and the cleaner will tell you on the day. We clean the whole carpet either way, with stains and traffic lanes pre-treated as part of the price, but we can't promise a mark comes out.

If you decide to replace it, City residents book bulky collections through the Contact Centre on 020 7606 3110. Furniture, mattresses, fridges and washing machines all go that way; a charge may apply, and they'll ask whether the items could still be used by someone else. You can also take bulky things to the Tower Hamlets Reuse and Recycling Centre, and the City's recycling A to Z has reuse routes for old carpet.

If it's a rug that's tired, rug cleaning happens on your floor, with the fringes done by hand. Prices for every room and item are on the full price list, and the smallest job is £67.

Questions from City flats

Can you come on a Sunday?

Often, yes, and it suits the City because street parking is free that day. Sundays are the first days to fill, so ring early. A 50% deposit by card or bank transfer holds the date.

Is there a charge for carrying the machine upstairs?

Only above the first floor when there's no lift to use. Then it's £10 a floor. A working lift means no carry charge at all.

Do you clean office carpets in the City?

Yes, when the office arranges it. The card on this page prices homes, so for an office or a shop ring 020 3129 1949 and talk it through with them.

My flat faces a light well. How long will the carpet take to dry?

Usually 5 to 7 hours. Heating on and a window open both help, and a morning start means the room is usually dry by the evening. If you're just over the border in Islington or Southwark, those pages have their own local notes.
