Keep it, or bundle it out for the council?

In Enfield, getting rid of an old carpet can cost nothing. The council takes up to six non-electrical bulky items free on the day set for your postcode, or on a day you pick for £22. Carpets and rugs go if they're tied into bundles, and everything has to be at the front edge of the property by 5.30am.

So it's worth deciding properly whether to clean or replace. A clean deals with the everyday grime in the walkways, but it can't undo bleach, burns or dye loss, and very old set-in marks may stay. The cleaner looks first and tells you on the day. Stain pre-treatment is part of the price either way.

If you'd rather take it yourself, Barrowell Green Recycling Centre in Winchmore Hill (N21 3AU) accepts carpets, rugs and household furniture, Tuesday to Sunday, 8am to 4pm. Every visit by car needs booking, and a van or trailer also needs one of the free vehicle permits, which come six visits to a year.

Cleaning carpets around Enfield, in Edmonton, Palmers Green and Enfield Lock

Edmonton N9 · N18

The Edmonton Green redevelopment, built between 1965 and 1974, brought 750 flats, including three 25-storey tower blocks. Most of Edmonton lives lower down, though. A terraced house is home to 34.7% of households, more than the 28.9% across Enfield, and three bedrooms is the commonest size. In a tower, the lift takes the machine up. In a terrace, add the stairs to the rooms when you price it, and it's all done in one visit.

Southgate N14 · N21

Southgate was mostly built up in the 1930s, and Charles Holden designed its art deco Underground station. Southgate Green and Southgate Circus are both conservation areas. The figures show something else: a lot of flats. Purpose-built blocks hold 42.0% of Southgate's households, against 24.3% in Bush Hill Park and 16.7% in Winchmore Hill. Not every block has a lift, so tell the office which floor you're on when it rings, and the price is settled before the day.

Enfield Town EN1 · EN2

Enfield's weekly market goes back to a charter granted by Edward I in 1303, and Enfield Town is one of the council's 22 conservation areas. Most homes in the Town ward are from between the wars (48.6%, against 35.2% for Enfield as a whole), with terraces and semis level at about 30% of households each. Two in three households own their home, so plenty of carpets here have been down a while. Pre-treating the walkways and the old marks is part of the price.

Palmers Green N13

Palmers Green station on Aldermans Hill opened in 1871, but building only took off once estates were sold for housing in 1902. That's why 63.9% of the homes predate 1919, yet only 6.3% predate 1900. Many were later split up, and a converted flat is now home to 28.3% of households. A house split into flats rarely has a lift, so above the first floor we add £10 for each floor the machine climbs.

Winchmore Hill N21 · N13

Winchmore Hill Green is a village green ringed by shops and restaurants, and the railway branch through Winchmore Hill opened on 1 April 1871. Houses run large. Over a third of households (36.8%) have four or more bedrooms, and 11.1% live in a detached house, against 7.5% across Enfield. More rooms make a longer visit, and a four-bed house with its stairs may take most of a morning. Start early and the rooms have the afternoon and evening to dry.

Ponders End EN3

Parts of Wright's Flour Mill in Ponders End go back to the 18th century, and the flour mills are a conservation area of their own. Old and new are about even in the ward: 24.8% of homes go back before 1919, and 25.5% have gone up since 2000. Only 36.4% of households own, against 52.4% in Enfield overall, so most carpets here belong to a landlord. Between tenants the rooms can be empty or still furnished, and a furnished room costs no more.

Enfield Lock EN3

From about 1812 the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock made rifles for the government. Most of its site is now the Enfield Island Village estate, which helps explain why 27.3% of homes in the ward were built from 2000 on. Three-bed homes are the commonest (38.2% of households). On an estate, the cleaner parks as close to your door as the rules allow and carries the machine in, so if there are visitor bays, tell the office where they are.

Bush Hill Park EN1 · N21 · N9

The first houses on the Bush Hill Park estate went up between 1880 and 1886, after the station opened in 1880, and much of the estate was made a conservation area in the 1980s. Most homes came later: 52.1% are interwar. Over three quarters of households own (77.2%, against 52.4% across Enfield), and owned carpets tend to stay down for years. If yours is an old wool carpet, say so on the card. The cleaner looks at the backing before starting and uses less water on wool.

The figures cover the wards named under each neighbourhood. Sources: Census 2021 (ONS, via Nomis): TS044 accommodation type, TS054 tenure, TS050 bedrooms, by 2022 ward; VOA Council Tax stock of properties by build period (CTSOP 4.1, 31 March 2025), LSOAs to 2022 wards (ONS best fit); postcode districts from the ONS Postcode Directory (latest), live residential postcodes.

The interwar house, room by room

Of Enfield's 128,340 homes in the Valuation Office Agency's March 2025 count, 35.2% went up between 1919 and 1939, and 28.3% in the 1930s alone. The Census adds that 61.2% of households live in a house.

That usually means a front room, a hall, a flight of stairs and a landing. Where the front and back rooms have been opened up into one, that's a through lounge, priced as one room: £61. Priced as a whole house, a four-bed house with a through lounge, hall, stairs and landing comes to £277; our carpet cleaning page goes through each step. On site, the stairs and landing can take up to an hour on their own.

The cleaner shifts chairs and side tables. Beds, wardrobes, pianos and loaded bookcases stay where they are and get cleaned round. A furnished room is priced the same as an empty one; we'd just ask you to pick up toys and breakables first.

Sofas before the bulky list

A light oatmeal linen three-seat sofa in a calm London flat

Sofas and armchairs are on Enfield's free collection list as well, which is tempting when one's looking grubby. Before you drag it out, think about a wash. Cleaning a three-seat sofa costs £83, an armchair £33, and the cleaner does it in your front room. Leave a sofa 12 to 15 hours to dry; having the heating on helps.

There are limits. We clean fabric, and leave leather and velvet alone. The cleaner reads the care label before starting, and an X or a "do not wash" label stops the job there. Covers that zip off are cleaned on the sofa, still in place. Have a look at sofas and armchairs for the rest.

Event days in South Edmonton

Near Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, two event-day zones, South Edmonton and Sunnyside, are controlled from noon to 9pm on event days. Households in those two zones are allowed two books of ten visitor permits a year, £21 each. If you live in one of them, have a permit ready or pick a day with no fixture.

Elsewhere in Enfield's zones, visitor vouchers come in books of ten: £10.50 where the restriction lasts one to four hours, or £21 for ten half-day vouchers in all-day zones. Outside a zone's hours anyone can park in the bays, and the office will ask about it when they ring. If the only option turns out to be paid parking, it goes on the bill at cost.

Landlords: 17 wards since 1 September 2026

Enfield's selective licensing started on 1 September 2026 in 17 wards, Edmonton Green, Ponders End, Palmers Green, Southgate and Town among them. A licence is £750 and usually lasts five years. Shared homes of three or more people from more than one household have needed an additional HMO licence across the whole borough since 1 September 2025.

For the carpets, the drill is the same in every ward. If you're the tenant, book it close to the end, with an evening free for the carpets to dry before the check-out. Landlords and agents book between tenancies and can have the invoice split room by room. Prices for each room and item are on the price list, and the smallest job is £67.

Enfield, answered

How hard is Enfield's water?

Hard, everywhere we checked. Edmonton's Thames Water zone averaged 274 mg/l in 2025, Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill 262, Southgate 267. Hadley Wood is on Affinity Water at 271. It makes no difference to the price; we only ask that the water and power stay on.

Do I have to tie up an old carpet for the free collection?

Yes. Carpets and rugs need to be in bundles, at the front edge of your property by 5.30am on the day. A bed counts as one item, base, mattress and headboard together.

Is a through lounge charged as two rooms?

No, it's one line on the list at £61. Kitchen diners and conservatories have their own lines as well.

Do you cover Hadley Wood and Edmonton?

Both, and everything in between. Put your postcode in the card for the price. We work next door in Barnet and Haringey as well.
